Arrghhh!!!!! Wiinds

Today was that kind of day; wind, wind and more WIND!!!!! Still I needed to get out and fish some. I decided to head to Richardson to see what the secret creek had going on this time of year. The water was much clearer than it had been a few weeks ago. That was probably the biggest plus for today.

The water was very choppy and as such I decided to start as far into the wind as I could and work my way back to the truck. As I scanned the water from the shoreline I didn't see many fish moving around, especially sizable ones. So I felt my only chance was to move down to the very end of the creek where I always seem to find fish. And once there I found some fish, even a few of the bass that the creek holds. The bass were sitting really low and didn't budge until I actually hit them with the fly! So catching bass seemed out of the question.

In the process of chasing the bass I found a good size school of "bream" there. I decided to start with a little rabbit hair nymph I had tied under an indicator. I soon found that this was not the ticket. So I put an Y2K and a small soft hackle under the indicator. Casting the 6 weight for the bass was not bad, but a 3 weight with an indicator and 2 flys in the wind that we had today was more than a chore. But once I got that combo in the water where I wanted I had a lot of looks. Then a quick hit on the Y2K and a fish that quickly tangled me in the netting along the shore and broke me off. I tried another Y2K for quite some time before figuring out that it wasn't the choice today either. Back to the drawing board.

I tried a couple of the bass flies I had with me and had mild interest from the bream at best. Next was a favorite for me the white wooly bugger, but no hits. I then decided to fall back on the old reliable, a partridge and orange soft hackle. Without the indicator it was easier to cast this setup. and once I spotted the fish to cast to again I was hooked up with one! It seems somewhat silly to some people, but I love to catch bream on a fly rod. They are a blast to play with and always eager to bite! I soon found that a slow retrieve with some pauses got me fish after fish. I hooked about 12-15 fish and had a blast.

Now the wind was a different story. I cursed it all day long and did lots of swearing and cursing at it. Often questioning why I can't get a day off without a cold front and/or strong wind it seems. One of my friends said he has been able to predict the weather by when I want to go fishing. If I am coming fishing, there is probably going to be a cold front. But that is life I guess. I have a good life and a beautiful woman that loves me, I guess a little wind is a cross I am willing to bear.
Good Luck and get out and fish!!!
